The Accidental Snapshot of a Cover Image

It all started during a humid Berlin summer, when I went to photograph a gig by a local band at the Georg von Rauch-House, where I met Vitxo, the guitarist and vocalist of the band La Sangre.

Who are La Sangre?

Meet La Sangre, an acoustic Latin punk rock duo formed by Chilean musicians Vitxo and Vini, based in Berlin’s eclectic Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg neighborhood. They fuse the rich heritage of Latin rock with punk’s raw, rebellious spirit—think Dead Kennedys and Misfits colliding with Latin American icons like Attaque 77, Los Prisioneros, and Molotov. The result is loud, intense, and unapologetically alive.

How did a candid photograph end up as an EP cover?

After meeting Vitxo, I was invited by the guys from La Sangre to a private event. I didn’t think twice—I grabbed my compact camera and walked through that door with the idea of capturing whatever felt real, unplanned, and raw. After the band wrapped up an amazing setlist, the night kept going. I stayed for the after-party and started photographing the atmosphere as it unfolded, feeling instantly inspired to catch the energy of the room and freeze the movement of the people dancing around it.

Like an invisible ghost, I started moving through the space. After a few shots, I realized I needed to use the camera’s built-in flash and slow down the shutter speed to really capture that energy—quick, candid moments without losing focus on what was happening in front of me.
1… 2… 3… snap…
I kept shooting and noticed the guests weren’t bothered by the brief bursts of light from the tiny flash, so I continued moving through the room, working the scene while letting the night shape the images.

The next morning, after cleaning a half-spilled cup of coffee off the table, I sat on the couch and started downloading the photos from the event, which I immediately shared with the guys in the band. I couldn’t help but smile when we realized that, among all the images, there was one that really stood out—one that felt worth sharing.

What surprised me even more was finding out later that the band had been inspired by the photograph to name the EP they were working on. The title? This City Wants Blood… A reference to the lives of new migrants in the city, and a celebration of Berlin’s vibrant, raw energy.

Lately, as I’ve been changing camera systems, I’ve been thinking about putting my Fuji away. But truth be told, this is where compact cameras really shine. Because of their size, they feel familiar and less intimidating, which makes them perfect when you don’t want to be intrusive and just want to capture honest, candid moments.

Photography is my safe space. Through it, I’ve met people who have opened the doors to their homes, shared their stories, and even their souls. I’m grateful for photography, because it gave me a purpose: telling stories, sharing moments, and, above all, documenting life.

Seeing that image become the official cover felt surreal. What started as a quiet, almost instinctive click of the shutter in a crowded living room ended up living far beyond that night—pressed into music, memory, and movement. It reminded me why I carry a camera in the first place: to trust my instinct, stay present, and let moments unfold on their own.
